HAPPY 242ND BIRTHDAY MARINES! SemperFi
For those of you that may not know, today, November 10th, is the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. We were born in 1775 and we are 242 years young today.
Those of you who know Marines will probably not be surprised to know that the Marine Corps was born in a bar. It was a place in Philidelphia built in 1685 known as Tun Tavern. The Tavern is no longer there, but there is a memorial sign nearby.
The Tavern was host to a number of other historical organizations such as the Masons and some notable men in American history like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson was known frequent the establishment…
It was on November 10, 1775, though that the Continental Congress Commissioned Samual Nicholas to raise two Battalions of Marines. Samual Nicholas wasted no time and headed straight to Tun Tavern where he appointed Robert Mullan, the owner of the Tavern at the time, as the first Marine Corps Recruiter.
The lessons in recruiting learned that day still prove helpful. If you are looking for a lot of men who will “volunteer” to run toward the sound of machine guns spraying bullets everywhere get them plastered and put a pen in their hand before they pass out… LOL
Just kidding… Kind of… 🙂
I have included the official 2017 Birthday Message from General Neller, the current Commandant, and a few other videos like the one on Chesty Puller and the last one is of Trace Adkins performing the song he wrote for us titled “SemperFi.”
To all of my brother Marines out there, God bless you and everything you touch in life… I have never had the honor of knowing or working with a finer group of men in my life…
No better friend… No worse enemy…
Any officer can get by on his sergeants. To be a sergeant you have to know your stuff. I’d rather be an outstanding sergeant than just another officer.
