Through the fog of war, it looks like Russia is getting very chummy with the nation of Syria. Reports are that this week, Russian forces began to patrol the streets of Douma, a city that has been in the crosshairs of the civil war there for some time, and was at one point a stronghold for terrorists.
Russian military police have been deployed in the Syrian town of Douma as of Thursday, RIA news agency reported, citing Russia’s defence ministry.
“They are the guarantors of law and order in the town,” the ministry was quoted as saying.
As of Saturday morning, Russian forces were seen on the ground fulfilling the mission of keeping the peace.
This is not the first time that Russia has appeared to be cooperating with the Assad regime in Syria, and it most likely will not be the last. There is so much conflicting information coming from that part of the world which side any one nation is lined up on is very difficult to determine, but at this point, the Syrian-Russian partnership is very clear.
What that means in the larger picture remains to be seen.
