Out in the real world, there are a lot of teachers who do not use social media. There are a myriad of reasons for this, none as stark as the hot water one Florida middle school teacher got herself into when she started a podcast based in what is being called white supremacy.
Dayanna Volitich, a history teacher at Crystal River Middle School in Florida, started the white supremacist podcast “Unapologetic” under the pseudonym “Tiana Dalichov.” On the podcast, she expounds on her racist opinions and her sincere belief that “science” has confirmed that certain races are smarter than others.
In her most recent podcast on Feb. 26, a guest railed against diversity in schools, dismissing the idea that “a kid from Nigeria and a kid who came from Sweden are supposed to learn exactly the same” and have the “same IQ.” Volitich enthusiastically agreed with the guest, and went on to argue that “science” has proven that certain races are smarter than others. In the same episode, Volitich boasted about bringing her white nationalist beliefs into the classroom and hiding her ideology from administrators. She said that when parents complained to the school’s principal about how she is injecting political bias into the classroom, Volitich lied to the principal and said it was not true. “She believed me and backed off,” she said.
True or not, teaching an ideology and then lying about it is simply dishonest. As for the “scientific” basis that kids from Nigeria don’t learn the same way as kids from Sweden, or that some races are smarter than others…there are so many factors impacting all if it, going white supremacy in the argument is a disservice to everyone exploring the question.
Volitich was turned in to her school district by the Huffington Post, and at this time, all of her communications have stopped.
There is a reason why so many teachers avoid social media.
